The North Market Grocery Store
Hunger Impact Partners continues to have an interest in a promising nonprofit experiment to serve one of Minneapolis’ food deserts. Thanks to Pillsbury United Communities and Hennepin County, and a growing list of stakeholders, residents of a North Minneapolis neighborhood will have access to the kind of healthy food so many take for granted.
Food deserts are urban neighborhoods or rural towns whose families lack ready access to fresh, healthy, affordable food. Chances are convenience stores and fast food restaurants abound, but no full-service supermarkets or grocery stores can be seen for miles – or several bus stops. Food deserts contribute to a poor diet and can lead to higher levels of obesity and other diet-related diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease.
Pillsbury United Communities is redeveloping a property on Humboldt Ave. N., which is being transformed into a grocery store that also offers health and wellness programming.
The North Market Grocery Store is a legacy project of the Hunger-Free Minnesota campaign, which provided funding and data.
