When school is out and parents are still at work, children need a safe place to be with their friends, with structured education activities, supportive adults, and good nutrition. After school programs that participate in CACFP At-Risk give children and teenagers the nutrition they need and provides opportunities for learning.

Research affirms how important high quality after school programs are for Minnesota kids: they help close the achievement gap, keep kids safe, and develop skills for success in work and life. Adding a meal component ensures kids receive necessary nutrition, improves health outcomes and builds stronger connections to school and community programs. Yet, fewer than 10 percent of meals available through the CACFP At-Risk Program are served to eligible youth. We support work that addresses barriers to participation such as administrative requirements, nutrition education and meal program awareness among students. Our grants can fund start-up costs, training, serving and point-of-sale equipment purchases at sites that provide a learning curriculum.
